One of the most important discoveries during the making of this film occured over the past year when thousands of people gathered on Maidan Nezalezhnosti and Kreshchatyk Street in Kyiv to protest and call for change.
Looking over my storyboards drawn 3 years ago, I was amazed at how images seem almost pulled from the future, as if the story itself was conceived after Maidan. But this was conceived years ago and from events 70 years in the past.
Is Ukraine's past relevant to the present? Of course it is, this is not a profound question. But finding the common thread can become a profound journey if one has the right eyes. This film will never intend to be a political film, but perhaps if the politics are seen on the periphery, we can look deeper and see that in the heart of mankind there is one common denominator: the constant and never ending struggle for freedom.
