Today I had a feeling of satisfaction as I finished my work. No distractions all day, just a steady long day of work and the feeling of progress. Not a big chunk of progress, but one more revolution of the wheel turned. Nothing is more satisfying to an artist than that feeling of accomplishment. Every day should be fulfilling in this way for the creative person. This is where and how we assimilate with the world. And we hope the world responds.
Having a stake in the game causes the artist to speak to the audience in a more intimate way than just a paid gig might. Once upon a time, the actor, the artist, the theatre performer, the musician, they all had to sing for their supper. Did you ever notice the street performer who attracts the biggest crowds? They know they need to be good, or no one eats tonight. They say dont make a movie with your own money, make it with someone else's. Sure, but what significance it will have if you do. Beware the support system, beware that the safety nets you seek are not the fish nets that drag you gasping for oxygen aboard the ship of mediocrity. I recommend any artist who wants to make something good to sing for their supper. Do it just to know how deep those vocal chords can go.
At the end of all of this, what if nothing becomes of it? At the very least, you will have given the world a gift, and you should never feel ashamed, depressed, useless, or down and out about taking the time it takes to make something that outlives you. However long it takes, that goal will make it worth it.
